Tale of the Lanterns

The design of palace lanterns originated during the Yongzheng period of the Qing Dynasty. The prototype was a lantern crafted by an elder from Tuntou Village, which was later presented to the imperial palace by a local official. This Tuntou lantern was designated as a tribute and named 'Gong Lantern,' symbolizing the grandeur of the imperial court. Over time, the character 'gong' (供) was replaced with 'gong' (宫), giving rise to the term 'Palace Lantern' as it is known today.
